I visited your library recently and a young lady was most courteous and helpful to me. She also gave me your Web address. I was raised in Lynchburg and my Maiden name was Priddy. I came to your library during our vacation to hopefully learn of my very mysterous Paternal Grandmother and guess what...we found what we were looking for. Now that I am back in Utah I can still return to your Library to research my ancestors, most of which I feel will turn up in Virginia. We have a wonderful library here that will also be helpful but I like to feel I am doing research while on my home turf of Virginia too. Thank You for your library and all of the work you do to store the information for us researchers!

I had the pleasure of visiting Lynchburg last summer and I found both the city and it's residents very charming. My grandfather, Edward Maddox was from Gladis & Lynchburg area but left with the railroad out to Oregon (early 1900's). The family had a tobacco farm outside Gladis. I hope to trace my family roots with the help of the libray.

I am originally from Lynchburg and visit at least four times per year. I have been especially interested in photographs and numbered sketches of historical sites and monuments in the Lynchburg area that I have seen in local hotel and restaurant lobbies. I have been trying to see where I could purchase similar items to no avail. I was told that the Library housed a collection of Lynchburg photographs but am uncertain if these are ever replicated as a fund raiser or not. Anyone able to provide me with information as to how I could aquire photographs and sketches of Lynchburg suitable for framing would be welcomed and most appreciated.

Just dropped in to see what you have. My sister lives in Brookneal, VA and would love to get to the library but can't drive anymore due to health problems. Do you offer a transportation service? It is bad enough that the Lynchburg Library charges $25.00 for a card if you don't live in the city which I don't think is fair. My sister is interested in genealogy so if you learn of any transportion means to pick up in Brookneal let me know.

During the past several years I have successfully traced my ancestors back to the first immigrant Drumheller who landed in Philadelphia in the mid-17th century. My success was due in large measure to the five trips that I made from San Diego to the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg, my home town until I was uprooted by WWII. The information gleaned from your priceless collection of genealogical data could not have been obtained from any other source. I know, because I tried countless "other sources." I intend to return for one final trip, and I look forward to one more delightful and informative experience. Thank you for your generous and courteous assistance.

Sarah Rice 1844,had two children: Ellen Rice, and Robert Rice who was my grandfather.Ellen married Dewitt Moore 1861-1930.Robert Rice married Mary(More) or Moore. From family documents ,there was a Robert(Bob) Ammanett listed as a connection to my family. I am not sure. It is believed that my grandfathers last name should be Amanette instead of Rice. It is said that he went away to the war and never came back. Also the Martins all apparently from Amherst County Winfree: I am looking for relatives of Charles Howard Winfree. His father's name was Paul and his mother's name was Mary. He had a sister named Lizzie, brothers named, Cornelius, Paul, and Adolpus. There are others but I do not know the names. If anyone has any information regarding these families, I would appreciate hearing from you. Lil

My current focus is upon an early player named John Snyder Mays, who it is proceeding to appear very possibly originated IN Lynchburg. Under consideration is the possibility that John S. MIGHT have related lineally to the 'Amherst' line that spawned at least a couple of 'Johns Snider/Snyder', during the latter 1700s & early 1800s. Reportedly born in 1790, 'young' John S. Mays is referred to as being 'from Bedford', when he first acquired land in nearby Pittsylvania in 1812. He is later referred to as being 'widow's son from Campbell', when acquiring his second Pittsylvania land tract in 1816. John S. married in Pittsylvania in latter 1820 to Martha/Patsy McDaniel>Douglass, and they had five children, between then & 1830. John S. died in early 1832, following which his residual family within the following year or so relocated interimly to TN, and subsequently to TX. Perhaps relatedly interest is the 'Henry Snider' family who materialized in 1782 Pittsylvania from origins unknown. Henry & family resided in Pittsylvania East of Gretna, eventually relocating to Bedford in latter 1790. Under consideration is the possibility that Henry Snider MIGHT have come to Pittsylvania FROM Amherst, and that the elder John Snider of Amherst MIGHT have been Henry's brother. Would appreciate hearing from students of members of the preceding lines. Thanks, Bob Mayse

An excellent site for research. Former native of Lynchburg. In the area of Johnson St./Daniels Hill. My sister still lives in Lynchburg. While vacationing there in 1998 my wife & I visited the Cabell Home , which during my childhood , served as a playground/Activities Center. I had to return to Lynchburg as a tourist to realize the Historic significance of my birthplace and it's Historic contributions to this Nation. As a former citizen of Lynchburg , I sincerely appreciate the effort to restore and document the city's History. However, since Johnson St.and it's incredible view of the James River and River Rd. has been closed ,I feel a sense of loss to many childhood memories. I've contacted many of the families that lived on Johnson St. to find the many Photos that were taken during my childhood . This has been an ongoing quest to preserve a piece Lynchburg's History of the "Village of Johnson St", the Village where I was raised! Again , "Thanks" for your efforts to preserve our History !

My grandfather lived in Lynchburg as a young boy.His name was Joseph Thomas Lancaster, born July 13,1882 in Orange Co.Va.On March 03,1907,he married Holmes Olivia Woodall born Oct.03,1884 in Campbell Co.Va.They raised their family in Altavista,Va,where my grandfather worked for Lane`s Cedar Chest Co.Their children were Maise,Josephine,Ralph,my dad Ray Dearing Lancaster born Aug.01,1916,Kenneth and Harvey.I`ve learned that my grandmother`s families were Maddox,Simpson,Covington,Scott,Moore,Carwile and Little. On my grandparents marriage license(1907) it states that Joseph`s folks were listed as Owen and Etta Lancaster. When my cousin sent for his grandfather`s Alvin (Joe`s brother) SS appl.(1938)it said his folks were George and Etta.Owen and George`s families were Coopers and Singletons.I want to find out who my gg-grandfolks were.Does anyone know anything about these families? Thanks,Shelda

I am looking forward to spending more time at your library in future years. My mother and I visited in May of this year and enjoyed the brief time we had at the library. Your staff was extremely helpfully to us in our efforts to locate information on the Lemuel Campbell descendants, Padgett families, and the Goodman families. It would be terrific if I could do more of my research in person, but I must rely on the internet because of the distance. Hopefully, at some time in the future, even more of your files will be available on line. Thanks so much, Faye

I am searching for the father of Winston H Lucus (Lucas)B about 1790, d 1849 Lynchburg VA. He married a Polly unknown about 1824. She died in Amherst Sep 4, 1826 leaving 2 small children, do not know whether they were boys or girls. He married April 10, 1827 Martha I Smith in Lynchburg. There is a son Luther Reuben Lucas, but I think his mother ws Martha I Smith, although I'm not positive. He married Frances M. E. Leftwich on May 28, 1863 in Bedford. Luther died April 10, 1892 in Bedford. Any help you can give me on this would really be appreciated. I am also looking for more information on Frances E. Leftwich.

We are new to Lynchburg having moved back to VA after 28 years in GA. We live in a house built and lived in by Robert Burkholder, a 19th century architect of some note in Lynchburg. Our house is on Trents Ferry Road. Unfortunately some of its features were lost via renovation in the early 1990s; however, we are working to restore its original "flavor" by adding a room with a large working fireplace, removing vinyl (ugh!) siding and replacing it with wood lapped siding etc. Question: We understand that Burkholder built the house on 300 acres previously owned by Jubal Early and that he and Early somehow bartered in the transaction. How can we confirm this story?
